al-Ukhaidar fortress

Today, being Friday and the holy day for Muslims, was our day off and we got to go on a field trip to al-Ukhaidar fortress. Karbala, the province I live in, is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam (second only to Mecca and Najaf). Karbala contains the burial place of Mohammed's grandson - Husayn. Muslims make pilgramages to this tomb, especially elderly awaiting death as they believe the tomb is one of the gates to paradise. My point in telling you all this is to say that Karbala has all these amazing religious cites that us infidels are allowed nowhere near. However, we were allowed to go to the al-Ukhaidar fortress which was pretty dang cool. This fort was built as a defensive fort and predates Islam - which means it is realllly frickin old.

It was good to get out and just relax. Domo-kun had fun. And we saw pupppieeeessssss.

I will start posting regularly again now that my internet seems to be back up.

Big hugs,

Julie
